Summer 2024 Workshop 1: Finding Peace in Felt & Stitch
On the 31st of July I hosted a delightful Felt & Stitch workshop in Edgbaston and it was a morning filled with creativity, relaxation, and a strong sense of community. The session was attended by four teachers who were guided through the meditative processes of wet felting and stitching.
From the moment participants walked into the workshop, the mood was serene and calming. Soft music played in the background, setting a peaceful tone that allowed everyone to unwind. All the materials were thoughtfully prepared ahead of time, ensuring that everyone could focus entirely on the creative process.
Wet Felting and Stitching for Wellbeing
The focus of the workshop was not only on creating beautiful textile art but also on promoting mental well-being. Participants were introduced to the simple hand technique of wet felting, using bubble wrap and washing-up liquid. It was heart-warming to hear one participant remark how relaxing it was to watch the washing liquid drizzling over the fibres, almost as if it were "dragging out their stress."
As everyone worked on their individual pieces, they found themselves instinctively drawn to the colours that resonated with them. Interestingly, it wasn’t until the end of the workshop that many participants realised how much their colour choices reflected their emotional states—a gentle yet powerful reminder of the deep connection between art and inner well-being.
A Space for Creative Freedom
One of the most important aspects of my workshops is the space I give participants to explore their creativity freely. During this session, one participant, without any prior intention, ended up stitching a butterfly in her felt—a perfect metaphor for the transformation many of us felt during the afternoon.
Throughout the workshop, support was offered only when needed. I believe that allowing people the freedom to create at their own pace, without pressure or judgment, is vital for both artistic expression and personal well-being.
Reflections on a Restorative Experience
The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how much they appreciated the opportunity to engage in a creative activity that felt so different from their daily routines. One participant noted how the experience "reset their brain," while another mentioned that this kind of creative play is something you rarely get to do as an adult, yet it’s incredibly fulfilling.
Workshops like these are not just about learning a new skill; they’re about reconnecting with ourselves and finding a sense of peace in the process. I am already looking forward to the next workshop and hope you’ll join us for another session of creativity, relaxation, and connection.
Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming events where we can continue to explore the world of textiles together.
